Position Opening- Director of Music Ministry
The Music Minister leads the music ministry of First Presbyterian Church so that music is a fundamental element of the worship experience to the glory of God and will enrich the worship experience for God’s people. The Music Minister seeks to integrate and create various forms of musical expression to fit the spiritual needs of the congregation. This includes using musical gifts as a means of and an aid to worship, leading the congregation to minister to each other through music, encouraging the fellowship of individuals and groups who share an appreciation of music, and fostering musical talents and expression among all age groups within the congregation.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Direct, lead and support the chancel choir and praise team.
- Provide guidance and work closely with the Accompanist to ensure they have adequate time to prepare for worship and to support musical groups who will be part of worship, and other church events.
- Work closely with the Pastor to ensure that music is well-integrated and supportive of worship experiences, and musical needs of worship are covered when Music Minister is not available.
- Plan and coordinate special musical offerings in celebration of the Christmas and Easter seasons.
- Plan and/or coordinate music for other worship activities such as Taizé and Nursing Home services.
- Encourage musicians from the congregation and broader community to share musical talents in worship with solo and/or ensemble presentations.
- Encourage small groups to offer special music, such as children’s choir, men’s chorus, and other ensembles.
- Communicate effectively with staff, volunteer musicians, congregants and others to develop and guide music ministry and to enable a positive worship experience for attendees.
- Provide for the upkeep and use of the church’s music library and musical instruments.
- Arrange for an appropriate substitute when not able to be present for a scheduled service or rehearsal.
- Seek opportunities to engage in joint musical activities with other churches.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding and commitment to seeing music as a ministry of spiritual growth and development, and as an expression of faith.
- Relevant musical education/training and/or musical experience.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of musical abilities.
- Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with staff and volunteer musicians in planning and programming, and to provide support and encouragement.
- Effective communication and people skills.
- Demonstrate Christian care for all persons.
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.
